Compare miles per kWh

Efficiency tells us how far the car travels with its battery energy. It affects charging cost, journey time and how much expensive battery capacity is needed.

Test the difficult scenario

Ask whether the car covers your regular winter motorway trip with a sensible arrival buffer. Heating, speed, cold air, wet roads, roof boxes and towing can all reduce range.

Better buying question

Instead of asking “What is the range?”, ask “What range should we expect on our normal winter motorway journey, and how quickly can we add the next 100 miles?”

Peak power is not the whole charging story

    Bring the real load. Test child seats, dogs, pushchairs, luggage or work equipment rather than relying only on litres.

    Use the menus. Adjust climate control, driver assistance, charging limit and regenerative braking without help from the salesperson.

    Check the charging plan. Confirm cable reach, charge-port position, tariff compatibility and realistic public alternatives.

    Price the complete term. Record deposit, every payment, final payment, mileage allowance, excess-mile rate and all optional products.

    Leave with the paperwork. Take time to compare the written quote, warranty and product documents away from the dealership.

Frequently asked questions

What should we check first when buying an electric car?

Start with where the car will normally charge, then compare the longest regular journey with a realistic winter and motorway range. After that, check efficiency, rapid-charging performance, warranty, insurance and the complete finance cost.

Is a bigger EV battery always better?

No. A bigger pack can add range, but it also adds weight and cost. An efficient car with a suitable charging curve may be easier and cheaper to own than a heavier car carrying battery capacity you rarely use.

Is WLTP the range we will get in real driving?

WLTP is a controlled laboratory test that helps compare vehicles. It is not a promise for every journey. Speed, temperature, heating, tyres, rain, load and driving style can all change real-world range.

Is a heat pump worth paying for?

It is most useful for drivers making frequent winter journeys because it can heat the cabin more efficiently than resistance heating in suitable conditions. Its value depends on climate, trip length, price and whether it is standard equipment.

Do we need 800-volt charging?

Not necessarily. It can support very fast charging on a compatible charger, but the vehicle's actual 10–80% time, average charging power and battery preconditioning are more useful than voltage alone.
