The calculator divides the total journey mileage by your EV’s real-world miles per kWh. It then allows for charging losses before applying your home and public electricity rates.

Enter home-charged mileage rather than guessing a percentage. This is useful for a long trip that starts with a cheap overnight charge but needs one or more public rapid charges later.

How is electric-car cost per mile calculated?

At its simplest, divide the electricity price in pence per kWh by the car’s miles per kWh. For example, 30p/kWh divided by 3.5 mi/kWh is about 8.6p per mile before charging losses. A mixed-rate journey needs separate home and public calculations, which is why the calculator asks for home-charged miles.

How do I calculate the cost of an EV journey?

Divide the journey mileage by the car’s real-world miles per kWh, allow for charging losses, and multiply the electricity drawn by the applicable price per kWh. This calculator performs those steps automatically.

Can I include both home and public charging?

Yes. Enter how many journey miles will be powered by electricity charged at home. The remaining miles are automatically costed at the public charging rate.

What efficiency should I enter for my electric car?

Use the real miles-per-kWh figure shown by the car for similar driving. For a winter motorway trip, use a lower figure than your warm-weather town average.

Does the EV trip calculator include charging losses?

Yes. The default assumes 90% charging efficiency, meaning slightly more electricity is bought from the charger than reaches the battery. You can change this figure.
