From battery maker to global car company

BYD began as a rechargeable-battery business in China and later expanded into electronics, cars, commercial vehicles, energy storage and rail transport. That battery background still shapes its cars: BYD develops core components including batteries, electric motors, power electronics and vehicle platforms within the wider group.

Who owns BYD now?

BYD’s automotive operation belongs to BYD Company Limited, a publicly listed Chinese company. It is not a subsidiary of another car manufacturer; the BYD group controls its own vehicle and battery businesses.

When did BYD arrive in the UK?

BYD had supplied electric buses in Britain from 2013, but its UK passenger-car launch came in March 2023 with the Atto 3. The Dolphin and Seal followed, before the range expanded into more electric cars, plug-in hybrids and commercial vehicles.
